Mister and miss fresher, after a few weeks in the university, how does it feel? It must be very interesting being in the university, isn't it? The beautiful environment, wonderful buildings you never saw in your high school, free internet, 'hot' chics and 'cool' dudes, and of course, absolute freedom. Wow! It's amazing.
Up to now, you should have noticed how the other students are utilizing the freedom they have in campus. I don't deny it should be utilized. In fact, it should be utilized maximally. It may be the highest degree of pretense to deny that having no teacher or prefect pushing you to do this and that is a good feeling. Even better, being away from the parents' tight rules. I will boldly say and be responsible for it; utilize the freedom maximally!
One thing you should always remember, however, is that you aren't the first to join campus, neither are you the last. In that case, there is no real peculiarity in you joining campus. Therefore, make sure that the manner in which you utilize the freedom will be unique and different from the way all others have used it.
With a positive mindset, this would translate to not taking drugs as many have always used the freedom to take drugs, not gambling, stealing , hooking or involving yourself in any other criminal activity. Similarly, I know one thing you really desired about campus is the ready availability of ladies and lack of restriction on the interactions. Please my friend, there is no pleasure in sleeping with every beautiful girl you come across, neither is there in establishing 'love' relationships in them.

Most campus relationships normally turn out to be infatuations simply due to lack of seriousness and faithfulness. Why don't you identify a serious partner and settle down with him or her in a serious relationship? What satisfaction will having a taste of all the girls in campus give you? Remember irresponsible sex is one mistake with so many repercussions glued to it. Feeling that you are an exception is what psychologists call 'neuro-stupidity'. Drugs can lead you to permanent insanity. Alcohol use, despite the amount you use, is totally harmful to your health. Should I even talk of betting? You already know what it has caused to so many students who, some, have even committed suicide. Please find another means of getting your own income. If you can't, minimize your expenditure.

Pause, take a minute of silence, reflect back to your village, your home, your family, your parents, your siblings. How is the village? How is your family? How is your home? What of your parents and siblings? Do they look like they need you? Of course they do. Why then do you want to disappoint them?
Consider all the young minds in the village who look up to you since you have made it. Will you mislead them? What of your peers who always admire you since they never made it to where you are, will you let them mock you? Your teachers who always gave you the best and are now expecting you to be a shining citizen, will you disappoint them? Remember your parents and siblings who have sacrificed a lot to let you learn. Consider how hopeful they are on you, will you kill their only hope? Instead of the campus changing you, why don't you change it?

Now you know that you're more than your own. The decisions you make not only affect you but many others, that some you may never even know. The campus doesn't need to change you, it needs you to change it. The best way to change it is being an example yourself. FREEDOM COMES WITH RESPONSIBILITY.

This article is particularly addressed to freshers but anyone who finds it important can read it.

Many people today believe that campus is the place where every kind of immorality is found. I don’t deny this, in fact it is more than a belief, it is a fact. Our campuses and immorality today are matrimonially joined and live together in harmony. They are inseparable. That is why university education has lost its meaning and purpose. It destroys a person more than it builds. It is for this reason that so many students today graduate with degrees they never joined university to study. I know you know as well as I do how much immorality has consumed our campuses today, but the question is, is everyone who goes though university immoral? Not at all. There are people who walk out of the university very free from the bondage of immorality. This is not very difficult, is it?

As I will always say, no one else, but God, is in control of your life or lifestyle. You are the supreme ruler of your destiny, thus whichever the level you want to reach in life, wherever you want to be in the near future, you should realize that it is you to get yourself there. However, there are some ill-mannered people, who have lost hope in life and the only thing they are after in life is increasing the population in the land of hopelessness. These are the people who have forced our university into a marriage with immorality. They have robed us of our future, our hope and they are slowly taking away our lives. It is close to impossible to stay away from such people in campus because they occur in every brand. Their main objective is just to get company in their land of hopelessness. They are pretenders, it may turn out to be someone you least expect. Despite this, there are people who manage to stay away from such people. These are some of the secrets of avoiding being a citizen of the hopeless nation;

     1.      Silence.
After graduating from high school, I know you must be very eager to join campus, if you qualified, that is. You must be very eager to enjoy that freedom everyone talks about. You must have been very eager to go to those bashes you were told by an alumnus who had joined campus, or befriend one of the beauties in campus. I’m not asking you not to, I’m asking you to refrain from putting them into words. Being silent keeps you secure from these people. When you’re silent, it is difficult to tell what you’re thinking. You may really be longing to ask a senior student to tell you how campus bashes always are, but don’t, because if you do, you’ll be putting yourself into a trap. Take some time to know people, beware of what they’re capable of, before disclosing your mind to them. You must learn to suffer in silence. If there’s a girl you really admire, wait, keep silent about it, let it be clear to you what kind of person she is.

     2.      Develop a Positive Brand.
Since you’re joining a new institution, with new people, you have the chance to develop whichever brand you want to have. You have a chance to change for the better. If you’re someone who had been enslaved by peer influence and immoral practices, you have your freedom and you need to choose what to do with it. Developing a positive brand means giving yourself an image of an upright person, even if you know you’re not one, and you actually become what you behold. This will protect you a lot from the ambassadors of immorality. Maybe you’re doubting, but ask yourself this, who will ask you to join him for beer if you’re always that serious fellow glued to his books, or Bible? Or who will approach that girl who is principled and sticks to those dreams and goals she has? Who is that who will be interested in a sexual relationship with a girl who is always smartly dress, not walking half-naked? The brand you develop is very important. What people perceive you to be is what will attract evil fellows to you or send them away from you. Developing a brand is just the first step, you must struggle to maintain the positive brand, if you want to graduate with the degree you joined the university to take.

      3.      Pray Persistently
As much as we can successfully stay away from people who will lure us into immorality, we can never stay away from ourselves. We may as well lure ourselves into these immoral activities. We can control ourselves, but not with our own ability. This is why so many fall into the potholes of evil, because they try to fight them on their own. Every single person who successfully completes campus education and graduates pure will always testify that God played the most important role. You must have at one moment felt the presence of God, right? When you pray to Him for guidance, He won’t fail you, He will give you the ability to control yourself. Unless you acknowledge God’s divine ability to help you control yourself, don’t be surprised to find yourself in the land of hopelessness.

     4.      Know and Respect Yourself
Do you know who you are? Have you mastered your destiny? Do you know where you come from, your background, your family? Well, I know you do. I beg you not to forget these things. If you will forget who you are, your family, your background and what you want in life, then you won’t know your worth. You won’t even know what is good for you and what isn’t. You will give the hopeless easier time to confuse you with their lies. If you really know yourself, you actually will respect yourself. If you respect yourself, I know it will be a great shame to have your mind aligned just towards girls, drugs, fornication, or such kind of immoral activities. If you do respect yourself, you will find it very difficult to have your hair look like those of a non-reasonable ‘weed’ addict, or to walk half naked in the name of being fashionable and modern. Self-respect will keep you confident throughout your university education, and you will safely graduate with the degree you joined for.

These are not very difficult things to do, are they? I know they are not. Even if they are, you can sacrifice anything to save your future, can’t you? These are some of the secrets that will help you survive in campus. Please try them, I hope you’ll make it through. All the best dear one.

WHAT DEGREE ARE YOU TAKING? WHICH ONE WILL YOU TAKE BACK HOME?
“I got into roadside kiosk to buy some mango fruits, and before long, I saw a woman walking from the direction I came from, with a small child who was walking quite faster than her. I heard her say to the child, “Degree, wait for me.” This captured my attention, and my curiosity won’t let me cease inquiring why she called the child ‘Degree’ and this what she told me, “Hmm! I sent his mother to the university, and this is what she brought home.”.” This is a common message which has been going around in WhatsApp.
The above message carries more truth than anyone can realize. I’m sure most of the people who read it must have considered it as a mere joke. But this is more than a joke. It actually poses a question to every university student on what degree one will take home from the university. When I read that message, that is what it communicated to me; that I might be very happy telling people that I take Bachelor of Science in Economics and Statistics, while in the real sense I will take a different degree back home. Is there anything difficult to understand here? I don’t think so. You do understand how it is possible to take a particular degree program in the university and take home a different one at the end of your four, five or six years of study, don’t you? If you don’t, let me show you.
Take a minute or two, think about your past. I know it is not so good to remember the past, but at times it becomes necessary so as to know ourselves. As I will always insist, no rational human being has a future without clear knowledge of who he/she is. Now, do you remember the first time you walked into a classroom? How did you feel then about education? Compare it to your current attitude towards education. Are they the same? What changed? You grew up? Maybe. But think of this, your mother or father escorting you to school every morning on foot, or if you were lucky enough, in a car. They did that not because it was your right, but because they saw a future for you, even though you couldn’t see it yourself. For those of us who grew up in poor/humble families, think of how your parents struggled to keep you in school. I will repeat, that wasn’t your right, it was their hope for a future for you.
From your childhood, your parents, teachers and elderly people have always been pushing you to do this or that, even if it were for your own benefit. With a childish mind, you could never have known being pushed to study is for your own good. You couldn’t have known being forced to be disciplined is for your own good. Or could you have known that being forced to stay at home was for your own good? Of course not. The difference between then and now is obvious; you’re now a grown up. You don’t need to be pushed, right? Yeah, it is not necessary because you know what is for your own personal benefit, what is right and what is wrong.
After your parents or guardians struggled with you through your primary and secondary education, trying to secure a future for you, seeing it for you when you couldn’t, they finally release you to the university, so you can see the future for yourself. This is when many change their programs of study in disguise. They forget their parents’ past strains to see them where they are and let their lusts overcome them. They forget what future they need and live a lie. They forget themselves and try to become other people they are not. They forget exactly everything they shouldn’t and all they remember now is how an alumnus in high school use to tell them how campus life is ‘sweet’, or how a desk mate urged him that alcohol is so interesting to drink. They forget themselves, and that means they forget their future too.
When you get to campus, why would you think you’re the first ever to earn that freedom in campus? Remember it is freedom with responsibility. When you forget yourself, your past and what takes you to the university, you freely offer yourself as a living sacrifice and a slave to peer influence and lusts and desires of the body. This is when you end up graduating a ‘weed’ addict while you went to study Economics and Statistics, or you take a baby, or babies, back home while you were to study Nursing, or you take a corpse back home, while you were to become an engineer, or you graduate in prison while you were to become a teacher, the only hope of the family. This is when you graduate an irrational non-reasonable being while you went to study law, or you graduate hopeless because you’re HIV positive while you were to become a journalist.
Now you know how this is possible, right? You can make a difference, I know it. You know what took you to the university, don’t let it get off your mind. You know yourself, don’t let anybody or anything replace that fact with an illusion. If you do, you’ll end up taking home a degree that nobody will be willing to talk to even think of. You will live to regret the opportunity you lost for the rest of your life. You know as well as I do, that opportunity comes once, no other will ever come again. If you had lost the track, don’t panic, you’ve had this information early enough, you can decide to change. It is you who has the key to your future, no one else? Why don’t you forget those drugs, why don’t you dump those ‘hooker hoodlums’ you hung around with in campus? Why don’t you decide to let go the midnight bashes and raves you attend? Do it and you will unlock the future meant for you.

I wish you could all view the four, five or six-year period in campus to be a very short time. Too short that all our desires and lusts can wait. Too short that there’s no time to waste if we’re to make a future out of our time in campus. Too short that we can only concentrate on matters that build up our programs of study. I wish we could have the same attitude towards lust as the lazy students have towards class assignments; they can always wait. I promise you, I will admit that you’re a million times stronger than me if you overcome your desires, while I overcome a thousand enemies of mine at once, you have my word. All the best dear one, fight for your future.
YOU CAN DO IT!

There are so many things you cannot do, but that is just because you believe it. There are so many things you can do, but because you think you can’t, you’ll never do them. Somebody said, ‘the only way to discover the limits of the possible is to go beyond them into the impossible.’  What then are the limits of the possible? When does something stop becoming possible? This is the question you should always be asking yourself. Is it when your friend tells you it is no longer possible? Is it when your critics tell you you are wasting your time or when your family tells you you need to forget it and move on? No, it is when you are content that you have achieved whatever goal you set for yourself.

What will always kill your dreams is lack of confidence in yourself, lack of belief in your own capabilities. When you forget who you are and be what your friends, family or teachers think you are or want you to be, you can never know what you want to be. In the same manner, when you forget where you come from, you can never know where you are headed to. Nobody else exists who knows you better than yourself. Not even your identical twin or your mom. Your friends now just have a glimpse of you, and your critics have just a fallacy of who you really are. You should therefore wake up to the realization that you are the master of your destiny. It is only God who divinely knows you much better than yourself, that’s why he assigned you a purpose. Nobody else has the power over your destiny, you are the supreme ruler, why don’t you take charge?
The chief killer of your future is yourself. When you allow yourself get influenced into irresponsible activities, you’re killing your future. Peer influence is an enemy of progress. It is the thief that has robed our youths of their morals. It has stolen the hope of our nations. It has broken our hearts and left us wondering if the future really exists. Peer influence is your enemy; it is my enemy too. If you reject it, and I reject it, then we will defeat it, and have our future back, regain our morals. The question however is, what is peer influence? Peer influence is when you fail to think as an individual and resolve to thinking as a group with your best of friends, classmates or any other group of idle peers, without first thinking for yourself. It is when you don’t consider what is good for yourself but what is good for yourselves. Don’t call it selflessness, because it is combined selfishness.  That is peer influence. It is also good to know what peer influence is not. It is not coming together to solve a problem or discuss a situation; that is teamwork. It is not meeting some fellow resident peers to solve a common social problem; that is citizenship. Peer influence is never heading towards anything positive, it always seeks to destroy every good thing it can.
Done with peer influence? Well, have some time now to think about yourself. Get to know that being you have never had time to discover: yourself. Know your capabilities, your strengths, your weaknesses, opportunities and threats. Know what pleases you and what doesn’t. Identify what you want in life. Identify your dreams and start chasing them. Discover your passion; what is it that when you do, you don’t gain anything in return but it makes you happy. When you create time to think about yourself, you get to know yourself. When you get to know yourself, you become self-dependent; you gain independence hence you can effectively think for yourself as an individual, but this doesn’t mean you don’t adhere to rules anymore. The most important key to the realization of your dreams is knowing yourself, having the exact impression of who you really are.  It is true that if you go alone, you can go fast, but going in a group makes you go further; but it is very important to think of yourself, for yourself and by yourself at personal level first. Knowing what is good for you as an individual will lead you to knowing what is good for you as a group. So, you must know yourself!

Now that you know you yourself and what you can do, what still holds you back then? You must still be lacking something. What could it be? Well, what hinders you from making a move is lack of belief in yourself; lack of self-confidence. You know you can do this, but you are afraid you can fail. So what if you fail? Does it mean you can never succeed? How many times did Abraham Lincoln fail politically? Did that deter him from being the sixteenth president of the United States? How could Gerard Philips have finally come up with the Philips light bulb if he never failed several times I his trials?  Failing is not an issue to discourage you, it a factor to encourage you, to reenergize you and to give you more confidence. Self-confidence is the most attractive quality you can have. How can anyone see how great you are if you can’t see it yourself? How can anyone trust you if you can’t trust yourself? How can anyone else believe in you if you don’t believe in yourself?  You have to believe in yourself.
Abraham Lincoln, the 16th President of the United States.

Make the move now. Come on, try it! Don’t worry, don’t be afraid, this is your chance. If you fall, you will stand and try again. If you succeed, you will celebrate. But why should you think you will fail? Failure is not meant for you. It is meant for those ones who have refused to think for themselves, those who don’t know who they are, those who have never believed in themselves. But you, are winner, that’s why you believe you can do it, because you can. Don’t think something could be impossible. No!  Nothing is impossible to him who shall try.  If you try, you make everything possible. So, I assure you, whatever it is you want to do, YOU CAN DO IT!
